Obex Technologies
Dr Alexis Joannides founded Obex Technologies in 2010 as a means of supporting and further developing the ORION application. ORION emerged in 2009 to address pressing clinical needs within the neurosurgical department at Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust to accurately record and maintain a conterminous record of emergency referrals in to the service and advice given. It is a software tool comprising of a database, a user interface, and an analytics package for interrogating the data that has been captured. As the software has been developed with the user experience as one of the primary drivers, the interface is intuitive and efficient. ORION implements an innovative and potentially disruptive approach to managing and exploiting healthcare data across organisations using web technologies, with significant service provision and academic impact. It allows controlled multi-site access for direct care, whilst enabling research and outcome reporting on anonymised data from the same dataset.
With the focussed support of Obex, and academic partnership with the University of Cambridge’s Department of Clinical Neurosciences, ORION was launched as a network in October 2012. Since then it has been successfully implemented across a number of institutions for supporting national registries, emergency referrals and research studies. The network is hosted by the University of Cambridge, which acts as the data processor for collected data, with Obex providing software development and application support.
Expansion to date has been focussed on developing a stable platform for support and development of the products that Obex already offers and in addition to provide the basis for the creation of new products.
Obex aims to continue to develop and support its existing product range whilst applying the technology to specialities adjacent to neurosciences. In particular these include vascular and transplant surgery, oncology and stroke medicine. Of particular interest are those medical specialities where care for any individual patient is likely to be delivered from multiple centres and by multiple disciplines. These specialities, which include trauma rehabilitation, benefit most from the centralised, secure, cloud based approach that the ORION platform offers.

Brain Injury HTC
The NIHR Brain Injury Healthcare Technology Co-operative (Brain HTC) is dedicated to identifying areas of unmet need for developing technology-based solutions amongst patients of all ages with Brain Injury.
The Brain HTC has supported the work of the ORION network through such means as the establishment of a rehabilitation working group to engage stakeholders and fund system refinements for an electronic Rehabilitation Prescription. The Brain HTC also funded the initial development of the Electronic Tasklist, providing the means to communicate and hand over inpatient tasks between healthcare professionals.

Register for Healthcare Involvement and Technology Evaluation (RHITE)
In partnership with ORION, the NIHR Brain Injury Healthcare Technology Co-operative (HTC) has developed a volunteer register for patients, carers and other interested persons to assist in the development and advance of healthcare technologies. Registering an interest ensures that interested parties receive information about the HTC activities and be notified of opportunities to take part in research.
The effects of brain injury can vary greatly, therefore we need a wide range of people with different experiences to help us. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Healthcare Technology Co-operative (HTC) would like to work collaboratively with patients, carers and other interested persons to build on their strengths and expertise around brain injury.
